Here, where the world is quiet;

Here, where all trouble seems

Dead winds' and spent waves' riot

In doubtful dreams of dreams;

I am tired of tears and laughter,

And men that laugh and weep;

Of what may come hereafter

For men that sow to reap:

I am weary of days and hours,

Blown buds of barren flowers,

Desires and dreams and powers

And everything but sleep.

Algernon Charles Swinburne(1837-1909)

Note to Conductor

An extremely smooth, well sustained, legato style is required throughout this music for its intended effect. The tempo, through rather slow, must be kept moving. The various triplet figures occurring in one line after another, and most especially in the middle and final sections of the work(from mesure 38 on), must never sound rushed - especially when the are in the lower and bass voices.

The interweaving of the triplet figurations between the Oboes, Clarinets and Alto Saxophones (fro mesure 38 through 50) must be very carefully managed, so that attention is never diverted from the main melodic line in the unison Flutes throughout this section. The intended effect is of a continual, slow, blending of one color into another between the soli Flutes and the ostinato bass patten.

From 58 through 68, the main melodic line shifts to the bass, and the triplet pattern of the preceding section continues as the descant above it. Care should be taken that this reversal of positions does not obscure the main line in the listner's mind.

Beginning at 75, the original theme returns, with countermelodies and other decorative patterns derived from the middle section. Once again, care should be taken that this theme be always heard distinctly, throughout the more elaborated textures.
